Mashup
The photographic images of football player Colin Kaepernick and civil rights icon Rosa Parks were combined into a digital mashup using a combination of filter, layer attribute, masking, and brush techniques. Kaepernick’s quiet refusal to salute the American flag, in protest of the everyday manifestations of institutionalized racism, echoes the sedentary civil disobedience of Rosa Parks when she refused to give up her seat in a Birmingham bus in 1955. Though separated by time, celebrity, age, gender, and place, Kaepernick and Parks are bound by the timelessness of a conscientious gesture.
